The first variety that is harvest is the Barhi. usually harvest starts in mid August but this year it was started in the beginning of August and should last into mid September. Harvest for the Barhi is unique, in that it is picked when it is yellow. Because it is harvested when it is yellow the whole bunch is removed from the tree at once where it is lowered on the trailer, from the trailer it is cut into strands that are packed into 30 lb boxes. The ripe dates are removed for separate packing, the bad dates are removed for the compost pile. |

The next varieties that we pick are the Medjul, Halawi, and Kadrawi. These dates are picked starting the end of August through September and are all picked with the same method. These varieties are picked as they rippen, so the same tree can be harvested multiple times during the harvest. These dates are all picked individually into a cloth basket (referred to as a parachute) which is lowered via a rope and put into baskets and the parachute is send back up the tree. The dates are then graded for quality and boxed for market.
The final varieties that we harvest are Zahadi and Deglet Noor. These dates are both dry varieties and are picked in a similar fashion. These varieties are both harvested by cutting the the bunches off the tree and lowering them down where each date is removed individually from the bunch then graded and sent to market. These dates are usually available in October and November. |
Harvest spans a number a months and each phase is dedicated to different varieties. Please check back to see what varieties are in season.
