It is also advantageous because it encourages root growth over a long distance which makes the tree healthier. One thing that can be either an advantage or disadvantage is that flood irrigation encourages growth of other plants between the trees. This can be good because it will keep the dust down however it requires constant mowing and disking to keep the weeds from going wild also the additional plants will take water from the trees.
One disadvantage is an increase in water usage which will increase the cost to grow the trees. The is also an increase in mosquitoes due to standing water. (Note that this will not cause the spread of West Nile Virus because of the limited time the water is sitting,)
The disadvantage is that there is a high up front cost to install the drip system. To have a drip system you have to have a reservoir which is costly to install and takes up land that can be used for planting. You also have to have a pump which is costly to purchase and costly to run. Then there is also the added cost of extra pipe needed to water the trees.
